Travails of the MBBS Aspirant in India – Pre College Days

MBBS Aspirants Travails
These are the experiences an MBBS aspirant faces... These are my experiences ... I am sure many had to go through this.

When people come to know that you want to do MBBS, they will “shoot” you with a lot of questions.

“Do you really want to do MBBS?”

“Did your parents force you?”

“Do you know that Anatomy is very hard? It is difficult to pass.”

And it goes on and on… If you are done with your entrance exams, you can experience an “avalanche” of questions…

There are no Doctors in my family. Some even told me, “This profession is not suitable for girls because you will never stop studying. Girls have to be married off, it’s better to take BDS, so you don’t have to do MD and all”.  But some were like,  “MBBS? A very good choice, I expected you to do this only”.  There was some boasting about their relatives who are doctors, they had better ranks and scores than me and that’s what mattered for them. Everything was just like bee-humming for me. With a swirling storm in my mind, I sat disappointed and sad thinking about the not so great scores and ranks I got.

The worst part is when people start calling you “Doctor, Doctor”. I hadn’t even joined, I had no idea about what I was going to do and still some had fun addressing me as doctor, especially when I wasn’t sure of me being one.

After counseling, admission and everything, some started asking “I have a backache, can you tell me what to use?”; “What should I do for my leg pain?”… I don’t know what fun they had teasing me.

Few had suggestions like “take dermatology for PG” “gynaecology” “medicine” “orthopedics”… And I thought, giving them a fake smile, “haven’t even joined MBBS and there are people telling what to choose for post graduation. Will you please stop?!”

And…… One day, when me and my cousin were talking, joking and playing,

I said “There are people who find me beautiful”

Cousin : “You better be an eye specialist after MBBS”

Me       : “What? Why?!!!”

Cousin :” They might be blind, you will have enough patients…”

These are the experiences an MBBS aspirant faces… These are my experiences … I am sure many had to go through this.
