Turning the pages of TVD- A Review of “The Vampire Diaries!”

The Vampire Diaries is a supernatural drama television series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on the book series of the same name written by L. J. Smith. The show was launched in September 2009 and has completed 4 seasons with the 5th season all set to premiere in October, 2013.

Most of us might already be crazy for it but for those of you who haven’t ever looked up what it’s all about- here is a quick insight into the show.Well, when I heard that this show was about vampires and “supernatural stuff”, the first thing that popped in my head was: I hope it’s not another teenage melodrama. Nevertheless, in search of some entertainment after my first MBBS sessional’s tedious exam, I set myself down on a Saturday night to see if I’d accept or reject this new addition to the vampire craze. The first episode to me seemed like a replica of Twilight, kind of cheesy and campy. However, I decided to stick to the show for a few more episodes. Man, I am glad now that I did!

They have done an exceptional job with the vampire mythology.  The vampire’s “look” was the best that I have seen until now. When vampires get blood-hungry you can see their eyes becoming bloodshot and veiny and bursting out fangs developing suddenly. The adrenaline rush moment was when they first showed their true forms- their faces changed, and within a millisecond they grabbed the carotid artery of the innocent and started draining the blood out of their host, I felt chills run down my spine. The write-up and the plot was smart and interesting. It kept me glued to the series.

The show is based on a small spooky mysterious town, Mystic Falls where Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and her brother Jeremy Gilbert (Steven McQueen), both high-school students live with their aunt Jenna after the death of their parents in a car accident. Then enters the smoking hot vampire- Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and love sparks between him and Elena. When their breathtaking chemistry starts to reach a new level, enters his sizzling bad-ass brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) who is bent on making his brother’s life miserable. He came to know about Elena who is exactly like his (yes, theirs!) “Ex”, who lived a century ago.

The show takes a lot of wild twists and turns with the entry of many characters starting from the long lost love of the Salvatore brothers to the striking and powerful “Originals” with a swirl of many exits as deaths and then some amazing come-backs.The story-line, production, direction, and acting is all superb. Surprising me further was that it can cram so much action into a 45 minute show. The plot keeps you guessing until the very end. It seemed the writers weren’t happy unless they end almost every episode with a bouncer, especially during the finale, when it blows your mind leaving behind a totally unexpected concluding scene.

Obviously this was the condensed version of it but the Truth is, “A Lot” happens in the show. Let me tell you, do not compare it with any other supernatural movies or stories. For people who fear it to be like Twilight , just know it folks, this People-Choice and three consecutive years’ Teen-choice winning TV show is  spooky, sexy, dangerous, ferocious and has darker history filled with great deal of shockers. So, who are you waiting for? BRING IT ON.
