Back in 1980s, you sat in the balcony sipping tea in the morning, noticing your surroundings, greenery all around and in 2014, you sit in the balcony, sipping tea and talk to yourself and say, ‘oh, this building is constructing rapidly’. In just a few decades, the rage of leading the global race has replaced trees with buildings, oxygen with harmful gases and jungles into trade centers.
In such a present situation, the UN decided to mark another special day in the annual calendar, the ‘World Wildlife Day’. The first ever World Wildlife day was celebrated on 3rd March, 2014. According to the UN, the day has been observed as “an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that conservation provides to people.”
The human race has raised itself to the worst levels of selfishness, targeting not just the humans but even the animals, the wildlife. Instead of realizing the worth of the wildlife, they have turned wildlife into a trade. The hunger for money and the rampant rise in the level of corruptions has driven wildlife into a business. The greatest threat to the endangered species (especially) is illegal trafficking and poaching of their parts and products. The illegal wildlife market mainly exists in Africa and Asia.
The illegal marketing and selling of the wildlife products has indirect links with the terror groups, who buy and sell wildlife products for their terror activities fund. In the past 20 years, there has been tremendous decline of gorillas, chimpanzees and other ape population. Another endangered species is the wild tiger, whose number has declined from 100,000 to 3200 in a century. 50% of the elephants in Africa have been killed since 1987 for the ivory trade.
There was a time when the school and college syllabus excluded environmental studies but today the environmental issues have become so serious that studying about environment and wildlife has become our compulsory subjects. We need to act in accordance to sustainability.
Protecting the wildlife, their habitat and climate should be our most important preference. Wildlife is the most major part of the environmental cycle and to balance the environment and the world, their protection should be our top priority.
