LunchBox – Not Oscar material

Lunchbox did not work for me. I might be the outlier here but I had high expectations and as is bound to happen – with high expectations come disappointments. The same did not happen with Ship of Theseus. I had high expectations there also and the film came through. Lunchbox not making to Oscars, in my opinion is the right decision. It did not have a chance.

Spoilers ahead ….

The film failed at multiple levels. I was completely under-whelmed with Irfan’s acting and his character. Maybe it was by design, but there was no connection with the character. Normally I would wait for Irfan to come on the screen but here I did not really care.

The number of distinct incidents for a two hour film were two few. So many of scenes felt repeated and I would just wait for the scenes to finish and the film to move on. This made the film seem very slow moving.

The messages and multi-layered story line (supposedly) was too subtle for me. I did not get it while watching the film. After the movie, while discussing the film,I did think about multiple facets involved in the film, but the film did not provoke enough sentiments in me.

The film is relentlessly sad. There is a love story which is told quite well (till it becomes boring like a one joke film) but other than that the film is full of despair.

See it as it is important to make such films successful. Keep your expectations low. You might be surprised.

I was hoping for a really tasty hot meal to be served. Sadly it was lukewarm though the recipes used were interesting.
