About the Certificate Program

The responsibility for laboratory safety rest: with each and every person working in the laboratory. Improving the safety of the work environment through the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazardous conditions is extremely important. This certificate program ensures the mandatory knowledge of laboratory hazards along with safety precautions needed for the laboratory professionals and students enrolled in health science courses. The principles and procedures of laboratory waste management will also be dealt with.

Who Should Attend

This program is designed for students of health science courses including medical biochemistry, medical microbiology, clinical laboratory science, clinical pharmacology, biotechnology enc. Though tailor made for clinical  laboratory students and staff, this program is designed to suit any research or health personnel in terms of laboratory safety and waste management. The course will also benefit the staff employed in health care, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industry.

Objectives of the program

  • To provide die candidates with necessary knowledge, skills and attitude about laboratory safety
  • To make them to know the rules and regulations that help keep the laboratory a sate place to work.
  • To make them able, to identify major hazards and to implement a plan to react and respond

Course Description
The course provides information on identification, evaluation and control of laboratory hazards. In addition
to this, emergency response procedures in the event of fires, spills, explosions and other laboratory accidents will also be dealt with.

A student centred learning approach will be adopted, with problem based sessions, group discussions, assignments and use studies, for curriculum delivery. There will be live contact sessions and will be conducted
Evey Saturday, [from 9am to 5pm} during the month. Each contact session will consist of lectures, Problem
based sessions, group discussions and case studies. Assignments and activities in the work place will be given
for each week. In addition to this there will be one invited lecture on specific topics by experts. The course
materials  and handouts also will be provided.

The topics will be covered under live sections:
Section 1 Biological Safety
Section 2. Chemical safety
Section 3. Electrical safety
Section 4. Fire safety
Section 5 Radiation Safety

Intake per batch
• Only 15 students per batch.

Selection process
The candidates will be selected on a first come first basis. Selected candidates will be informed separately.

Eligibility
Candidate with bachelor degree in any of the following disciplines; Science| Health science| Pharmacy| Allied
health| Nursing. {Students in the final year of their course are also eligible]. Diploma holders working in the
clinical laboratory, research labs and industry will also qualify.

Commencement of the program: 3rd December, 2011

Examinations:
There will be a written and an oral examination at the end of the course. Minimum marks for a pass is 50%.

Assessment
Each candidate will be declared successful based on a continuous assessment process throughout the course.
The marks obtained in the examinations and attendance will also count.

Issue of Certificate
On successful completion of the course each candidate Will be issued a Certificate in Laboratory Safety. A course transcript along with the certificate will be issued by the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology, Manipal College of Allied Heath Sciences, Manipal University.
