White Coat Drug Dealers – An ode for the World Pharmacist Day

World Pharmacist Day – A day for the people who spent nights without sleep rote learning the chemical structures of drugs; about hundreds of medicinal plant names and characters, a day for the people who have spent their lives behind discovering a drug to cure the common cold you catch often, to the biggest challenge, Cancer. Pharmacists are the unsung heroes of medicine. The world wouldn’t have been the same without them. Imagine waking up in a day where no one knows what medicine you should take when your head is bursting in headache , that’s where we come in.

Over the past 50 years, the role of pharmacists has evolved along with the health care needs of our population. Currently, there is a movement beyond the traditional compounding and dispensing of medication towards a more professional advisory and primary health care role. Pharmacists can apply their knowledge and skill to become directly involved in the healing and education of patients. The phrase “ask your pharmacist” is becoming increasingly common – and with good reason. Pharmacists are an integral part of the community and serve as an important source of knowledge.

Pharmacists are ready and willing to share their knowledge concerning:

• Optimal drug therapy for patients with a focus on drug interactions and potential side effects
• Treatment of various medical conditions
• Education and promotion of the general health of the public
• Where to get emergency care

So, coming to the end, I being a 3rd-year pharmacy student would like to say that, being a pharmacist comes not only with great opportunities but also great responsibilities.

P.S. For that we have to really study a lot. After all, we are the ‘legal drug dealers’
