Washington and Lincoln February

February is the month when we celebrate the birthdays of two great statesmen. George Washington was born February 22, 1732, and Abraham Lincoln, February 12, 1809.

Washington, the father of our country, will always? hold a prominent place in the hearts of our citizens. His brave deeds at Bunker Hill and his undaunted courage at Valley Forge gives a minute picture of the personality of this great general.

Abraham Lincoln, emancipator of tho slaves, lives on in – not only the hearts of students of? American history -but, the hearts of all Americans. His outstanding characteristics were straightforwardness, honesty, patience, and courage.

America is very fortunate to have two such fine examples to guide them in these grave, history- making times. If we can continue to follow, unflinchingly, the footsteps which these men left in the sands of time, our democracy and our nation will continue to have freedom of speech, press, and religion; and above all freedom to all races regardless of creed or color.

With this background we can move ahead to make our country even a stronger and firmer democracy in a republic so that “these honored dead shall not have died in vain and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

We must preserve democracy and one positive way to do it is to adhere firmly to the principles established for us by Washington and Lincoln.
