Six-figure student loan debt could end up with medical and legal professionals. Luckily, many student loan forgiveness for nurses exist and services also exist for these doctoral degree holders to help them reduce their student loan burden:

  • Some health professionals, via the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Plan, will obtain up to $50,000 in student loan forgiveness in return for 2 years in voluntary service at a clinic that has a scarcity of healthcare professionals. You can be eligible to get an extra pardon for additional service.

By Waiting For 20-25 Years

When you have a federal loan and you are on an income-based repayment (IBR) program, if you work in the public sector, you can get your student loan balance forgiven after 25 years or 10 years. All Federal student programs are available except for default student loans, combined Parent PLUS loans, and Parent PLUS loans. Depending on your salary and family size your monthly student loan contributions are regulated. For instance, a household of three with a $45,000 annual income will pay about $157 monthly on an IBR program. You should apply for IBR by contacting your loan servicing provider.

Loans drawn out on the IBR program after 22 July 2014 will be forgiven after 20 years, rather than 25 years. For more information please visit the Federal Student Aid website and IBR Data.

But Who Pays For It?

Several people, particularly those who have worked extremely hard to repay their loans, oppose the forgiveness of student loans (at least for the Federal loans) because it is taxpayers ‘money. That’s basically true if your student loans are forgiven by the Federal government, it means taxpayers have covered for your university education.

In that way, it’s the same as financing your education using grants from the government. Private student loan repayment is almost non-existent, so if private lenders provided these types of services, other customers of the banks will end up funding them through fees and interest.

Downside Of Getting Student Loans Forgiven

You’re supposed to disclose forgiven loans as taxable income in some cases. This will increase your tax burden that year and will end in a tax bill in April when you register. Not every student loan repayment plans demand that you pay taxes on the loans you have forgiven. For more details please contact your tax preparer.

  1. It is amazing that there are such good loan forgiveness options for nursing students. Nursing is such a heavy-duty profession and that, coupled with the weight of outstanding loans can be overbearing.
With these options, it just may be possible to fill the deficiency the country has of qualified, well-trained practitioners.
    Thanks for the read.
