Seventeen IITs / Universities from India figure in Asia Pacific Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2014 ranking list of 300. Manipal University has been ranked at 181-190, giving it the highest ranked private university in India status and the only private university from India in the top 200 bracket!
Manipal University has been ranked ahead of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, IIIT Allahabad, University of Pune and Amity University among Indian universities and colleges.

While academic reputation is given 30% weightage for ranking institutions, student/faculty ratio accounts for 20% of the overall criteria followed by papers per faculty, citations per paper, employer reputation and internationalisation at 15%, 15%, 10% and 5%, respectively.
Prof. K. Ramnarayan, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University had in a previous interview stressed that Asian and especially Indian institutes always score lower because more international faculty do not visit our colleges.? Prof. Ramnarayan also said that there is too much emphasis given to research while ranking universities across the world and that these different rankings do not take in to consideration, how well quality education is being delivered to the students and if he/she is being allowed to grow.
