Coloring Your Hair during pregnancy

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, coloring your hair during pregnancy is probably safe because very little hair dye is absorbed through your skin; however, many women prefer to err on the side of caution and go au naturel until after the baby arrives. So what can you do to make your roots less conspicuous until your next coloring? Try one of these quick tips:

  1. Avoid parting your hair down the middle or in a straight line. These will bring attention directly to your new growth. Instead, crisscross your part to hide your roots under layers of colored hair.
  2. Wear your hair wavy close to the roots. Straight hair will draw attention to the difference in color.
  3. Brew up a custom herbal rinse to minimize the difference in color. Steep several herbal tea bags in boiling spring water, refrigerate the tea overnight, and then rinse through newly shampooed hair. Try chamomile for blonde hair, raspberry or ginger for red, and rosemary or black tea for dark. But avoid using acidic fruits such as lemons on your hair, which can cause even more root discoloration over time.
  4. Use a vegetable color touch-up stick to temporarily cover roots and blend your color.
  5. Use a color-enhancing shampoo and conditioner each day. Apply it thickly around the roots and let the conditioner set for 2 to 3 minutes.
