Capt Gopinath, Founder CEO, Air Deccan was in Manipal last month for the annual day of WGSHA where he put forth the proposition of an increased air traffic to and from Manipal. He also asserted the need for a new airport in Manipal. Accompanying him was Capt PV Deshpande, former Indian Air Force pilot, currently commercial pilot for Deccan. Capt Deshpande was here to survey plausible land for the airport. A government survey revealed that most air traffic in Manipal goes via the Mangalore airport & the inability of the government to further expand the Mangalore airport owing to space reasons necessitates an airport in Manipal.
