15th April, 1912 – The day death loomed over thousands of people as the ship sank, gradually.. taking with it the precious lives on it. Yes, today is exactly 100 years since the great Royal Mail Ship ‘TITANIC‘ sunk. A day of dread for the very many who perished, the ones who survived it and the ones who lost their dear ones on it.
This ship which started its maiden voyage on 10th April from Southampton was on its way to the New York City. It hit the iceberg at 11.40 pm on 14th April, when it was just 600 km from its destination. But it totally sunk on 15th after about three hours. If only there were enough lifeboats, maybe more people would have survived.
This is an accident which we all know about. But would we, had it not been for the movie starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Though it’s a fictional one, it did capture the horrendous sequence of events very well. Watching the movie, imagining the trauma of the people who tried escaping their end is heartbreaking.
There’s nothing I can tell you in this post that you don’t already know. With all the earthquakes and tsunami warnings around and the end of the world – 2012 talks, the 100th year of the sinking ship reminded me of the unpredictability of life. There’s really no way to figure out what’s in store for us or the people we love. And still, till these unfortunate events don’t come upon us, we do not realize the important little things in life. There is so much chaos all the time.
Let’s take a little time off this Sunday, and imagine ourselves on that sinking ship. What are the things do you think would cross your mind? Is there something you would want to tell someone? Some pending apologies, some unfinished business, an unfulfilled dream, a hobby not lived, some unsaid words, heartfelt regrets? And when this exercise is done, thank God you are still very much alive. Praying for those souls to rest in peace, get out of your chair… you now have a list of things to do!
