- Reality Bites – If you grew up in the 80’s and reached adulthood in the 90’s, then you’ve seen this movie. It’s about romance and choices at a time in a person’s life when they’re not really sure about anything. Starring Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke.
- Chasing Amy – Kevin Smith basically defined Generation X with his hilarious movies which is why there are three on this list. This movie is definitely his best about a lesbian and the comic book artist who loves her. Starring Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams.
- Threesome – This movie is about sexual experimentation among college students – and a group of really close friends. The casting is terrific for the story. Starring Stephen Baldwin and Lara Flynn Boyle.
- Swingers – An ensemble comedy about five guys, all in their twenties, trying to figure out the mystery of life and women. It’s set in the hidden clubs of Hollywood and has a few “gen-x” elements. Starring Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn.
- Office Space – What happens when generation-x grows up? This encompasses the slacker mentality of dealing with a boring job that’s going nowhere. I think most people can relate to this movie. Starring Ron Livingston and Jennifer Aniston.
- Clerks – Generation X is all about ironic humor and this movie definitely has it. The entire movie is set in a convenience store and done in black and white. This was the first Kevin Smith movie. Starring Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson.
- Singles – When a person is in that age range when they should be settling down with the right person, life isn’t easy. This movie focuses on a few different people and their relationships. Starring Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon.
- Dazed and Confused – Although this movie takes place in the seventies, it still is true to the gen-x attitude. It’s all about partying and hanging out and growing up. Great first time performances. Starring Jason London and Milla Jovovich.
- Slacker – A hilarious low-budget comedy that could take place in any college town. Short scenes of twenty-somethings with too much time on their hands spouting off random conversation. Starring Jason Linklater.
- Mall Rats – Yet another Kevin Smith film about life revolving around the shopping mall. Young people with time on their hands who are into everything typical – comic books, music, ironic movies. Starring Jason Lee and Shannen Doherty.
