Tips for teachers of deaf/hearing impaired students

.  Avoid moving around too much in the room

.  Model a positive attitude toward the deaf/hearing impaired students

.  Do not expect less work or achievement from them.

.  Speak at a moderate pace and face the student.

.  Do not talk to the black board.

.  Do not exaggerate mouth movements or “shout”

.  Stand away from, and not in front of windows or bright lights

.  Use visual aids when possible

.  Write a simple lesson outline on the board.

.  Write new vocabulary on the board.

.  Write homework assignments and due dates on the board.

.  Identify when other students are speaking

.  Use captioned filmstrips or videos when possible

.  Communicate regularly with parents.

.  Repeat questions asked by other students.
