This is precisely what the town of Murudeshwara constitutes. ‘Murudeshwara’ literally being another name of Lord Shiva, this town is famous for its enormous Shiva temple on the banks of the Arabian Sea. This sure makes it a splendid weekend destination.
Even as we entered the premises of the Shiva temple, we were awe struck at the beautiful concoction of the elements of nature. With the Arabian Sea in the backdrop, this temple is constructed on a hill named Kanduka. It has a huge statue of Lord Shiva in a peaceful and meditating pose. This is the world’s 17th largest statue, and the second largest of Lord Shiva. It also has a Raja Gopuram which is 249 feet high!
All in all it is a feast for the eyes and soul.
How to get there:
The Murudeshwara temple is 102 Km from the town of Udupi, and it takes approximately 2 and a half hours to get there by road. You can follow these directions.
You can also take a bus from Udupi to a place called Bathkal which is en route, and board another bus from Bathkal which takes you directly to the temple.
Do not forget:

- To go to the top of the Raja Gopura and look at Lord Shiva and the Arabian Sea. They take you in batches for Rs.10 per person. This is a view you hardly get to see anywhere else in your life.
- To take your camera. You will rue this chance your entire life if you don’t.
