Allowing same-sex marriages federally would be destructive and dismissive to the core of our society: marriage and the family. By destroying this, you will directly affect the rest of society today and in generations to come in a negative way. With the following points, I will explain why I believe marriage should be between a man and woman.
Marriage is a complex institution and must do several things in order to function fully. It must foster the bonds between men and women for three main reasons:
1. Encourage the birth and rearing of children
2. Provide and appropriate setting for children to grow and
3. Insure the cooperation of men and women for the common good.
Without these core traits, the union ceases to be a marriage. Instead, you are left with an agreement to stay with each other for sexual convenience or security, which is basically what the secular world considers marriage today.
Some could argue that by denying same-sex couples the right of marriage, you are discriminating them of benefits that other heterosexual couples could attain. But in this argument they fail to mention that same-sex couples can achieve these same rights by appointing a Power of Attorney, Living Together contracts, Last Will and Testaments and Designation of Preference. These options can distribute property, appoint a guardian, provide for pets, provide for funeral and more. On the issue of discrimination, you must be a part of a recognized minority in order to fully claim benefits and rights. And since no where in the Civil Rights Act does it claim ?sexual orientation? as part of a minority, being gay would then have to be proved as a born and unchangeable trait. This has yet to be proven by any means. Until reasonable evidence is presented, this is not relevant.
Finally, I would like to discuss the health care system. This could be the straw that breaks the back of the insurance industry as new dependents become eligible and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. A study by The Kinsey Institute showed that 28% of homosexual men had sexual encounters with 1,000 or more males, and half said their partners were mostly strangers. By allowing marriage to these couples, it will not decrease their sexual partners. In the book, The Male Couple: How Relationships DevelopHuman Sexuality Books), the writer found that of the 156 couples they studied, 75% of the partners learned within five years that for their relationships to survive, cheating had to be tolerated. Bad dating habits lead to bad marriage habits and will further deteriorate the state of marriage today.
In conclusion, now is the time to reinforce our society, not reconstruct. Allowing same-sex couples to marry will not make their unions any more like marriage, it will simply destroy the meaning.
