NNHF Project of The Year 2014: Kasturba Hospital, Manipal

The IDEEA project (Identification, Diagnosis, Education and Empowerment for Acton of people with bleeding disorders) is a Novo Nordisk Hemophilia Foundation (NNHF) project in Manipal, Karnataka, South India. The project partner is the Kasturba Hospital, Manipal University, represented by Dr Annamma Kurien,Processor of Pathology and Associate Dean, Melaka Manipal Medical College, Manipal. This project has consistently demonstrated all the key criteria for the NNHF Project of the Year Award. They bring innovation to their approach, they act with tremendous dedication, and their activities have shown a tremendous impact on patients and access to care.

This project team does not simply bring care and education to the patients they serve, they bring love. They laugh with them, cry with them – their entire hearts are in everything they do and it has led to outstanding results. The defining characteristic of the entire project is passion.

Dr. Annamma Kurien, President, Manipal Hemophilia Society and Ms. Sulochana B, nurse coordinator received the Novo Nordisk Haemophilia Foundation (NNHF) project of the year award 2014 from the officials of NNHF, Switzerland for the project “IDEEA (Identification, Diagnosis, Education and Empowerment for Action of people with bleeding disorders)” at the World Federation of Hemophilia 2014 World Congress, Melbourne, Australia held during May 11 – 15. Congratulations to the hemophilia team at Manipal University for the great achievement .

In their many educational programs and Ray of light camps, they educate with passion. They help patients and their families not to be afraid of social stigma of hemophilia. They teach physical therapy to protect joints and occupational therapy to promote sell-reliance. They walk hand-in-hand with the families and patients in their care to give them the support they need. Once a child and their family has come to the Kasturba Hospital treatment center, they are never alone again.

The World Hemophilia Day event was a celebration that demonstrated their passion. Entitled Sa Re Ga Ma sing… fly … play! Our hopes for hemophilia, this was a remarkably successful day that included a magnificent kite flying competition, dancing, singing, educational role-playing, and perhaps the single largest group of people using stretch bands ever assembled!

Mr. Syed Kirmani, legendary Indian cricketer, was a celebrity guest promoting that people with hemophilia be active. Mr. Kirmani may have expected this to be a simple photo op, but certainly found himself emotionally drawn into the amazing spirit of the event. Like every child, parent, nurse, and doctor who participated, Mr. Kirmani undoubtedly felt the palpable love that infused every minute of that Special day.

Even the reports they prepare for the NNHF are a labor of love. Their reports are always on time and provide comprehensive data and figures. But it is in their descriptions of activities and events that the obvious sense of passion for what they do comes through.

It is the ambition of the project team to make the Kasturba Hospital known as one of the top Hemophilia Treatment Centers in India. The experience of NNHF? working with this team makes us believe that they have what it takes to achieve this remarkable goal. The NNHF have found them to be a model of commitment and excellence that they would like to see in all our project teams. They have been extraordinary ambassadors to others and for the NNHF as well.

For all of these reasons Novo Nordisk Hemophilia Foundation have named them to be the 2014 NNHF Project of the Year.
