A six week certificate course on the above topic will be held at the Manipal Centre for Philosophy and Humanities (MCPH), Manipal University from March to April 2011. There will be two sessions every week from 5.30 to 7 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays. The course will be conducted by Prof Sundar Sarukkai, Director of MCPH along with two experts on Gandhian thought, Prof Raghuram Raju and Prof Sameer Banerjee. Special lectures will also be delivered by other experts.
The course will introduce seminal themes in Gandhian thought with particular relevance to social transformation. Gandhian ideas are very relevant in today’s rapidly changing society. Gandhi’s experiments on social transformation have not been seriously duplicated or even engaged with.
This course will enable the participant to understand core Gandhian concepts such as ahimsa, satyagraha, trusteeship, seva and so on. The aim of this course is to give the participants a deeper understanding of these concepts drawing upon both Gandhi’s philosophy as well as situating them within other philosophical traditions such as ethics. This course will also create a forum to discuss the challenges confronting social transformation in India today.
The first session will be on Monday, March 14 and the second one on Tuesday, March 15. A collection of reading material for the course will be given at the time of registration.
To participate in the course please send a brief background note about yourself and what you expect from this course by the evening of 11th March 2011. Because of limited seats, preference will be given to early applicants.

Why is this Gandhi given so much importance in India ignoring other freedom fighters like Netaji SC Bose,Shaheed Bhagat Singh and chandrasekar Azad.He is NOT the ONLY freedom fighter in India;he's just one of them.He knew how to garner publicity with his lawyer brain.
The reasons why I don't like giving too much importance to Gandhi are:
1.He could have prevented execution of the trio of Bhagat Singh,Sukhdev and Raj Guru with his clout,but didn't do so.More disgusting thing is that Shahid Bhagat Singh is mentioned as terrorist in CBSE text books…
2.I ain't supporting Godse's way of protest,but Godse's concerns are understandable.Why should this Gandhi fast for granting 50 crores to pakistan,the nation which killed many who were crossing the border during partition.Nathuram Godse is true nationalist,but he should have adopted non-violent way of protest.
3.Our first PM would have been IRON MAN OF INDIA-Sardar Vallabhai Patel hadn't it been for Gandhi veto power at that time.I believe nation would have progressed very well under Patel than Nehru.
I don't know if Gandhi's methods won us independence but I have another perspective widely expressed in blogs.After WW-2,british became weak,both militarily and economically.So,it is believed that they granted independence to india as they can't control their colonies any longer.
I dunno if my comment will be published or not but if published I welcome comments on my take.
