Fifteen things I learnt in my Freshman year

It’s been more than a year now, and I’m missing Manipal at home. The first year marks the transition from school to college, and this is the year where you will realize that it’s a different world out there. I hope this post will help you get through one of your most memorable period in college, your freshman year.

1. Everything has a price. This is the first and foremost thing I learnt. You can’t get anything unless you put something into it.

2. It took me a year to realize, that a majority of my expenses in Manipal were on trivial things. For example, 8 out of 10 times , I took an auto where I could’ve easily walked.

3. Being organised = Being efficient. Yes, I know how the boys’ hostel rooms are, but nothing productive comes out of a room strewn with dirty clothes.

4. Inspite of what anyone tells you, it’s upto you to figure out what works best for you. Only you can do that. Even if the world ends, people are not going to do your stuff for you.

5.There is nothing like spending some time with a group of like-minded people. These are the people who share your interests and, and most likely to help you out in things.

6. Extra-curriculars help break the monotony. Clubs are a fun way of getting to know new people, and working with your seniors. For example, my best memories of the first year are during TechWeekend.

7. Try to appreciate the little things that come your way. A walk in the rain or an all-nighter in the hostel with friends, will be one of your best memories.

8. I’m not cool and I’m cool with that. Stop trying to fit in, it’s way more fun to be yourself.

9. Just because people cannot connect to a particular way of teaching, it doesn’t mean the teacher sucks. Know which way you learn best, and try and follow it.

10. DeeTee is not the answer to everything.

11. Hostel food will suck, get used to it. This will actually make you appreciate home food more, when you go home during the breaks.

12. Sports is an awesome way to make new friends. Be it Marena, or in the TT room.

13. Your expectations and reality will usually be in two erroneous levels. That is the way things are. Either do something about it, or stop expecting.

14. Seniors are not Satans with two horns. They are just people like you and me.

15. Last but not the least, I have a lot left to learn. You might as well look forward to it, yourself.

Some of them are good, some of them need to be publicly flogged. Most subjects in taught in manipal are extremely simplified, if you really want to learn then you need to supplement your learning with other resources. Check out course material from other quality institutions like IITs, or other foreign institutes for the same subjects. You will find that you are severely lacking.
