In today’s match, India witnessed a nail-biting finish at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai when DC won their first match of the season against CSK by 7 wickets with 8 balls left to finish the innings. While an experience-packed CSK took on a young and relentless DC; the fact that the match was a battle between the idol and the student was what set the tone for the match.
We all are aware that Wankhede is well known for the batting paradise that it is. The toss was sure to play a crucial role because of the short boundaries and affirmative pitch that has always favored the chasing team. Winning the toss, Rishab Pant decided to field first, as expected. After a shaky start by CSK with both their openers dismissed quickly, Suresh Raina and Moeen Ali built a good platform for the rest of the long batting lineup to capitalize.
The return of Mahendra Singh Dhoni to cricket after 161 days, had increased the expectations of all his fans. To their dismay, their hopes and plans were foiled on his second ball when MSD was bowled out duck; his first time in IPL since 2015 by Avesh Khan. However, CSK was able to put up a respectable score of 188 and not set everyone up for disappointment thanks to Jadeja and Sam Curran.
Catches win matches and if you drop three of them in an innings, you can rarely expect yourself to escape defeat.
In the second innings, CSK needed quick and early wickets in order to stay in the match but that was far from what ensued. The opening stand between Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw took the game away from CSK. Shardul, with a performance that wasn’t up to the mark, managed to take two wickets towards the end, but it was a little too late as Pant struck a 4 and ended the innings on a high note.
The most notable performances from the match included Sam Curran’s cameo, Shaw’s power-packed strikes, and Dhawan’s brilliant innings. The young team from Delhi having defeated the experienced team from Chennai made the score- guru 0 chela 1. As per The Hindu, Rishab Pant said, “In the middle phase, I was under some pressure. But we did well towards the end. It was very special walking out for the toss with MS. He has been my go-to man. I have learned a lot from him.”
The next match between KKR vs SRH to be held in Chennai is going to be interesting seeing how Jason Roy, who replaced all-rounder Mitchell Marsh might be unavailable for SRH for their first two matches.
