In this we will be talking about different scopes of dentistry which can be opted once you are done with your under graduation. If you’re looking to choose a dentist for specialized care, here are some of the established specialties to look for:

Dental Public Health: Dental public health is the science and art of preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting dental health through organized community efforts. It is that form of dental practice which serves the community as a patient rather than the individual. This specialty is also involved in developing social policies related to oral health, such as the fluoridation of water.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology: Oral pathology is the specialty of dentistry and discipline of pathology that deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. It involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the face, mouth, and jaw.

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: This field involves using x-rays and other imaging technologies to study diseases of the face, mouth, and jaw.

Endodontics: “Endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” is Greek for “tooth.” Endodontic treatment is treatment of the inside of the tooth. Endodontics is that branch of dentistry which is concerned with the morphology, physiology and pathology of the human dental pulp and periradicular tissues.

A root canal is the most well-known endodontic procedure.

Periodontics: This field focuses on caring for the structures that support the teeth, primarily the management of gum disease (periodontitis) and placement and maintenance of dental implants.

Pediatric Dentistry: This field focuses on treating dental problems in children. Such dentists can perform any procedure on a child. It mainly focuses on behaviour management of children.

Prosthodontics: A special word for a special branch of dentistry. Skilled hands and sure eyes to help make teeth, mouths, faces right again and make you feel good about yourself again. It includes  treating dental problems with prostheses, which include dentures, crowns, and dental bridges and replacing dental implants.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: This field involves a variety of oral surgery procedures including extractions, placement of dental implants and treatments of genetic conditions such as cleft lip and cleft palate.

Orthodontics: An orthodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. This specialty focuses on straightening teeth and improving people bites using braces and retainers.

General Dentistry: After doing 4 yrs of B.D.S degree plus 1yr of internship a person is considered as General Dentist.  General dentistry is a broad and gratifying profession. General dentists are not directly limited to what they can do in practice. This includes, Prosthodontics (crowns i.e caps and dentures i.e plates),  Periodontics (gum surgery and management), Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy),  Pedodontics (treating children), Geriatrics (treating the elderly population), and orthodontics (Braces).

General dentists plan and sequence all of the treatment for all of their patients. They can then choose to perform the various stages of treatment or they can choose to refer to specialists. They can start off with their own private clinics.
