The Power of Choice

We are all a result of the choices we make. So choose to be the best version of yourself. Choose to follow your heart.

As we live our lives everyday, we mould our future with the choices we make. At the age of around twenty, most of us know this. But simply knowing this is not enough. You see, half of us know this and take our choices too seriously. The other half knows this, but chooses to stay in an intricately woven fabric of denial. Obviously enough, neither group wins. The former, driven by ambition and grit, easily miss out on the little joys in life, while the latter, driven by a dangerous combination of defence mechanisms to protect their ego, almost always miss out on the multitude of opportunities that life provides them. Because the simple truth is that the person you are is the result of the choices you have made.

What life teaches you, if you look at the immediate reality that surrounds you, is that everyone is talented. Everyone is really good at something. And whether they care to admit it or not, everyone has put in hours of sweat, blood and tears to become really good at that something. So it’s all about what you decide to be great at. It’s a choice. The choice to pull all nighters, learning how to code, the choice to spend countless hours at the gym, or the choice to spend hours everyday, figuring out how to look your best. The best part? There’s no choice which is right or wrong. It’s all up to you.You have the option for free questions, the questions you wish to solve and not some imposed on you!

That being said, it’s important to value the power of decision-making exactly for its worth. Just because every choice you make has a consequence, don’t pull your hair out over the little things. It’s okay to watch a movie when you’re tired, it’s okay to go out and party once in a while, it’s okay if you screw up a couple of tests too. It doesn’t mean that every decision you make is the difference between success and failure. Learn from your mistakes, fail forward and stay happy. Emphasis on stay happy. Don’t live your life-like you’re in a hurry to finish a long checklist of goals. Have the checklist, but don’t be in a hurry. Don’t be too harsh on yourself if you slack off or if you mess up. Success isn’t an overnight result. Trust in your efforts, trust the process. Because diamonds don’t just need heat and pressure to form, they also need time.

On the other hand, know your role. Every choice you make has a consequence. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. So it’s okay to spend a few years living a life that not many would, if it means getting to live a life that not many could. If you’re smart, use your mind to contribute to society, to make the world a better place. If you’re strong, use your strength for the greater good. Don’t let the fear of failing or the discomfort of trying new things turn you into a burden on society. Don’t let the temptation of your comfort zone get the better of you. Ask yourself a question now. Are you doing everything you can to be the best version of yourself, for yourself? And if the answer is no, then you’re not doing life right.

Live your life by making decisions that make you a better person. When asked to choose between comfort and discomfort, have the courage to step out of your comfort zone. When asked to choose between learning something new and perfecting an already acquired skill-set, follow your instinct. When asked to choose between your happiness and your ego, choose your happiness. When asked to choose between love and sacrifice, have the character to make the right choice. Choose to be the best person you can be. Choose to follow your heart. Because the person you will be tomorrow, will be a result of the choices you make today.
