So you’re counting the days to return to the hallowed halls of Manipal Institute of Technology. Here are a few ideas on what to expect when you return back for your third semester at Manipal. A few tips too, to aid your academics.
Electrical and Electronics: Third semester has six hardcore EEE subjects and there’s no respite. Each subject carries 4 credits. Although difficulty of a subject depends from person to person, past history proves that AEC and EMT could to be the real brainteasers. This deadly duo also accounts for most number of backs. Maths becomes the ‘chilled out’ subject while Machines is all about numericals and calculations. Digital Electronics Circuits generally goes for a high cut-off, because it is highly scoring and at the same time slightly confusing. ECA is basically hardcore BET and is very easy to understand, provided you solve a lot of numericals. There are 2 labs each of one credit. While Analog and digital lab is the practical extension of what is being taught in class, the other lab comes in 2 packages- the software and the circuit lab. Attend labs regularly and you’ll do just fine.
Tip:Try to clear the doubts in class itself and maintain proper notes. Do not bunk many classes as each class is linked to the previous one and once you lose the flow it becomes very difficult. Study on a regular basis rather than cramming before the exams. Maintain good internals because sometimes, the end sems can be really dicey. For the majority, EEE can be really demanding. You’ll have to prioritize your time and make some sacrifices. If you do all this, then EEE becomes easy, just like any other branch.
Civil Engineering: As compared to all other branches, scoring is easy in Civil. Since scoring is easy, you’ll find four out of five people around you having crazy internals at the end of the two sessionals! So, though the subjects are easy to understand and papers are not over the moon, one is required to simply attend maximum lectures and work regularly to get maximum grade. The third sem does give ample opportunities to up your CGPA, so be at your best. Also, the department stresses on discipline under the present head.
Mechatronics: Mechatronics third semester is very similar to the Physics cycle. There are plenty of half-days (4 at least) but the subjects are slightly difficult compared to the Physics cycle. Subjects like Analog System Design and Engineering Thermodynamics need to be studied regularly if you want to score well. The labs are easy and you will find the machine shop very interesting.
Mechanical: You’ll have to study the following subjects- MSM, BTD, SOM, Maths 3, MPE and KOM. BTD is quite enjoyable and MSM is very easy if you maintain proper notes for it. In SOM, theory is tedious, but the problems make up for that. MPE and KOM are more rote learning type subjects. While MPE has a lot of diagrams, KOM is heavy on theory. Most students breeze through Mechanical Drawing. The forging part of the workshop will make you sweat like never before, but mould-making (casting) is easy. Focus mainly on the minor experiments in SOM lab.
Electronics and Communication: The 3rd semester of ECE will be your second toughest after 5th semester. Scoring a good GPA is no child’s play here. The subjects are built upon the basics of BE & BET so it wouldn’t harm you to brush up on these concepts in the vacations. While Logic Design can be safely regarded as a relatively easier subject, subjects like Analog Electronics and Signals and Systems are a tough nut to crack and understandably carry the most number of backs. Network is basically higher level BET and builds advanced questions based on your KVL, KCL, transients principle. Here also Maths is considered to be the ‘chilled out’ subject. COA is a rather interesting subject which builds your base for Microprocessors/Microcontrollers (4th semester). Both the labs require you to prepare in advance by solving assignment problems in the journal. A viva will also be held in every lab so do not bunk any lab.
Tip: Do not bunk any lecture as last minute studies from a topper’s notes will not help you. All the subjects are conceptual & need to be clearly understood. Also avoid getting into the bad books of any Professor and maintain notes as certain professors are particular about this.
Computer Science: The 3rd sem of CS is as easy it gets and there are only 5 subjects. You can afford to take things easy and still get a good GPA. The core of this semester is programming. Once you are strong with your PSUC concepts, DS and OOP are just very natural extentions of that. Getting a strong grasp on coding is hence very essential to crack these subjects. LD is basically an extension of BE and paying attention in class would help to make it a lot more easier. OOPS and DS are purely programming based. But mugging won’t help here. Try to get a hold on the concepts and its a cakewalk after that. These are also 2 of the most important subjects for any computer engineer and form a major chunk of interview questions. COD is generally considered a tough subject, but it can become all the more nightmarish if you try to cram everything in the end. The sheer volume of circuits, diagrams and electrical terms can get annoying. If you like only the coding part of CS, this is probably going to be your worst nemesis. Maths is quite easy- pay attention in class and build good notes and it’s more or less done.
Tip for vacations: Try to read up on classes in C++, stacks, queues, pointers and linked lists and also improve your basic programming skills by trying out questions on codechef.com, codeforces.com and geeksforgeeks.com.
