Top 10 Generation X Movies

  1. Reality Bites – If you grew up in the 80’s and reached adulthood in the 90’s, then you’ve seen this movie.  It’s about romance and choices at a time in a person’s life when they’re not really sure about anything.  Starring Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke.
  1. Chasing Amy – Kevin Smith basically defined Generation X with his hilarious movies which is why there are three on this list.  This movie is definitely his best about a lesbian and the comic book artist who loves her.  Starring Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams.
  1. Threesome – This movie is about sexual experimentation among college students – and a group of really close friends.  The casting is terrific for the story.  Starring Stephen Baldwin and Lara Flynn Boyle.
  1.  Swingers – An ensemble comedy about five guys, all in their twenties, trying to figure out the mystery of life and women.  It’s set in the hidden clubs of Hollywood and has a few “gen-x” elements.  Starring Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn.
  1. Office Space – What happens when generation-x grows up?  This encompasses the slacker mentality of dealing with a boring job that’s going nowhere.  I think most people can relate to this movie.  Starring Ron Livingston and Jennifer Aniston.
  1. Clerks – Generation X is all about ironic humor and this movie definitely has it.  The entire movie is set in a convenience store and done in black and white.  This was the first Kevin Smith movie.  Starring Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson.
  1. Singles – When a person is in that age range when they should be settling down with the right person, life isn’t easy.  This movie focuses on a few different people and their relationships.  Starring Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon.
  1. Dazed and Confused – Although this movie takes place in the seventies, it still is true to the gen-x attitude.  It’s all about partying and hanging out and growing up.  Great first time performances.  Starring Jason London and Milla Jovovich.
  1. Slacker – A hilarious low-budget comedy that could take place in any college town.  Short scenes of twenty-somethings with too much time on their hands spouting off random conversation.  Starring Jason Linklater.
  1. Mall Rats – Yet another Kevin Smith film about life revolving around the shopping mall.  Young people with time on their hands who are into everything typical – comic books, music, ironic movies.  Starring Jason Lee and Shannen Doherty.
