TOEFL exam, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), is a standardised test generally taken by those students who want to take admission in a foreign university. The exam is conducted to evaluate the English proficiency of the students who wish to study abroad, but their first language is not English. Most of the institutes and colleges in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK ask applicants to submit their TOEFL score before taking admission to any programme. There are more than 7500 colleges and 165 countries across the world who accepts TOEFL score. Many countries where the mode of imparting education is English also accept TOEFL scores.

Know your TOEFL score

The score of the TOEFL test is based upon your performance on the questions in the exam. To score well in the exam, try to attempt the maximum number of questions. To receive an official score TOEFL you need to attempt at least one question from each section: minimum one question from Reading and Listing section, one essay and attempt minimum one Speaking task. If you appear in the online exam, you will get four scaled section score and a total score:

  • Reading Section (Score of 0 – 30)
  • Listening Section (Score of 0 – 30)
  • Speaking Section (Score of 0 – 30)
  • Writing Section (Score of 0 – 30)
  • Total Score (0 – 120)

In your scorecard, the official score you receive from the ETS also includes feedback of your performance which is the reflection of your performance level, and description of the kind of tasks test takers within the report score range can typically do.

In this test, there is no such standard for passing and failing in the exam, higher educational institutes and colleges decide their own requirements. The score of the TOEFL exam is valid for two years, and there are no such restrictions to the number of times you can take this test.
