The Pan Am Smile by Vaishnavi Karnik

Farmer Village Happiness Man Smile Old Happy

A farmer smiles,
When his crop fails and there is no food
When rains fail and there is no water
He fights back and manages to smile
When there is no roof above him
When closing of eyes reminds him only of miseries
When his sleep is taken away by worries
When his little ones are starving
He still manages to smile
When he has no money to buy clothes
Or to send his children to school
When he spills blood and sweat for a crop
Yet never gets paid for the effort
He manages to smile
Uncertain of tomorrow
He smiles hiding all his pain behind it
He smiles welcoming hopes
He smiles to stay strong.
Though uncertain yet he hopes his tomorrow would surely be better than today.
