This new psychological dramatic thriller begs the question, “What would you do for love?”
The series opens with a bookstore manager Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) when he apparently falls for the aspiring, coquettish writer Guinevere Beck(Elizabeth Lail) as she walks into the store. The story which seems to be a simple tale of the lovelorn lonely boy,a.k.a Joe takes a chilling turn as the true motives of him are revealed. Joe is our ‘Nice Guy With Issues’ protagonist. His life is full of pain and he is the embodiment of toxic masculinity. Joe believes, almost obsessively, that he is a good guy for Beck and is her protector.
Beck is careless, selfish, and allows men to use her (often to her advantage). She glorifies her life on social media. She says she’s independent but her rich friends pay for everything and she wants a man to rescue her.
You might feel the urge to yell, scream, gasp, laugh and cringe while watching the series but it keeps you hooked.
The series is adapted from the novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes, just like the book, the novel also keeps us riveted and engaged. The series seems to be a horrifying love letter.
‘YOU ‘ plays with extremes, upending the way we look at relationships and modern dating. We are forced to face the worst aspects of our modern day obsession with traditional gender roles and masculine authority. You’s first season is somewhat subversive, but also a majorly soapy – because who doesn’t love a “messy bench that loves drama”?
Pitch perfect for the era, ‘YOU ‘ by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble is definitely binge-worthy. It has made everyone take note on their ‘Prince Charming’ and is nothing short of an amusement park.
