What Are Hangnails and How should Teens Deal with It?

Teenagers must have noticed triangular splits of skin around their fingernails. These tend to dry up as they lose their natural oils easily. So if you put your hands in water a lot or are afflicted with the nail-biting syndrome, Hangnails are something that you are very familiar with. Hangnails might sound harmless but when they get infected they can cause serious inflammation of your cuticles and other tissues surrounding the nails.

The solution to this problem is very simple. Firstly, clip them off with sharp sterilized scissors. Do not bite them at any cost. This way the cut would tend to get deeper and may even get infected. A lot of teenagers may the mistake of clipping a hangnail when it is still hard and end up ripping the skin more.

Another suggestion is, to soak your fingers in an oil and water solution and make moisturizing a habit of yours. The best way to prevent hangnails is to keep your cuticles moisturized always. Do not just leave it for when you get a manicure.

Many products are available in the market for the treatment of your cuticles. Your cuticles play a vital role in protecting your nails from harmful bacteria and fungi. Since some of these products contain acidic chemicals it can cause irritation if it is kept for too long. Therefore, use such products sparingly and always follow package instructions carefully.
