Telangana – Nothing Extraordinary

After 1956 the British system of provinces and princely states was abandoned and Indian states based on ethnicity and language were created. French and Portuguese colonies in India were made into union territories of Pondicherry, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Daman and Diu in 1962.

Precedence to creation of Telangana include:-

  • Bombay State was split into the linguistic states of Gujarat and Maharashtra on 1 May 1960.
  • Nagaland was made a state on 1 December 1963.
  • In 1966 Punjab was divided along linguistic lines, creating a new Hindi-speaking state of Haryana on 1 November, transferred northern districts of Punjab to Himachal Pradesh, and designating Chandigarh, the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana, a union territory.
Statehood was conferred upon Himachal Pradesh in 1971 {5 years after it was formed)
  • Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura were formed in 1972
  • Sikkim joined the Indian Union as a state in 1975.
  • Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram became states in 1975
  • Goa became a state in 1975
  • Daman and Diu became a separate union territory in 1975
  • Chhattisgarh was created in 2000 out of eastern Madhya Pradesh
  • Uttaranchal was created in 2000,was renamed Uttarakhand in 2007 was created out of the Hilly regions of northwest Uttar Pradesh
  • Jharkhand was created in 2000 out of the southern districts of Bihar.
  • Telangana was created in 2013 out of Andhra Pradesh.Telangana Map

All states since 1956 till 1975 were created under Congress rule, in 2000 under BJP and in 2013 again under Congress.

The above history makes me feel that nothing out of ordinary happened by creation of Telangana. Happy now.

  1. it is not so simple as you put… unfortunately there is more than just a date to the formation of Telengana.. the underlying politics especially is baffling. with a formation of a new state, there is distribution of seats in the parliament and that affects the power play.. as we will soon see! no wonder all major national parties have silently supported the division.

Although, its not completely within my capacity, but from the few friends that i have from the area, i do get some information.. and according to many of them.. this is a fight mainly for Hyderabad! now i cannot assert any of this.. but a few news debates that i followed also point to the direction.

as for me, personally, i do not believe diving a state gets any help… look at Jharkhand and Chattisgarh. A good government will be able to handle a big state equally as well as a small state.

Further this division will cause an uprising for newer states like Bundelkhand, Gorkhaland, Purbanchal et etc.. how much more are we gonna divide ourselves?

  2. people are simply looking at the politics involved and do not know the ground realities.if you do visit the rural areas in this region you will agree that this demand is geniune
