In today’s day and age people are paying less and less attention not only to what they are eating, but how they are eating. The act of consuming food has degraded to a mindlessly automated behavior in which people simply eat what they are given without much thought. Sometimes this may even produce a sensation of guilt due to guzzling on much more food than previously intended without even noticing. Mindful eating is a great solution to one of these modern dilemmas.
What is mindful eating?
In essence, mindful eating represents eating attentively and with the intention of fulfilling a certain purpose with the mentioned act. In other words, it means that one shouldn’t eat food mindlessly and should be aware of what they are eating and in which quantities they are consuming the said food. Furthermore, it also suggests that a person shouldn’t eat simply for the sake of eating or out of boredom. Eating should be done only with the goal of sating ones sensation of hunger while also providing satisfaction in doing so.
Mastering mindful eating
While eating mindfully may seem complicated or difficult at first, it is quite simple and may lead to greater changes in your lifestyle. All it takes is a few alterations in how you approach food and eating in general.
- The first step you should take is lengthening the amount of time it takes for you to complete a full meal. This is one of the most important parts of mindful eating which suggests eating slowly and without any distractions. Take the time to enjoy the food you eat and to notice the plethora of flavors. Do not rush through this and you will undoubtedly come to appreciate the aspects of food which many people tend to ignore. When starting out you may even consider setting a timer of your meal time to around twenty minutes, which is the time that your brain takes to sense the feeling of fullness and satiation.
- Ask yourself a series of questions such as why, what, when and how much of something are you eating. Contemplate whether you are eating simply due to having nothing else to do at that moment, which can usually be the case, or whether you are actually feeling hungry. Find out what kind of food you’re actually eating, whether it’s healthy or not or whether it satisfies your nutritional requirements. There are no wrong answers when choosing food unless it has no nutritional value or is a detriment to your health. Decide the time when you are going to eat and create set portions of food to make sure that you do not overeat.
- Most people fail to stick to mindful eating due to time constraints. While this is a common problem make sure that you do it when possible. Such problems may arise due to work or other personal predicaments. Even when travelling you should try to make time to eat mindfully.
Overall, mindful eating will make sure that your quality of life increases over time by adding subtle changes to your lifestyle. Whether or not you can keep such eating habits or not depends on personal commitment, however you should strive to improve your life as much as possible and mindful eating will help you achieve that.
