Two teachers at Manipal‘s Kasturba Medical College have turned their desire to lose weight into a school-wide game among the faculty based on a popular  reality program “The Biggest Loser.” The contest is now in its third season for the faculty, and the feedback seems to be positive.

Dr. Geetapriya, anesthesiologist, and Dr. Shanthi, who teaches Microbiology, have organized the contest. “A few of us teachers figured it would be a good idea, heading into the holidays and all, to try and lose a little pre-‘Holiday weight’ together,” Dr. Geeta said. The first round consisted of nine faculty members, all women. Dr. Geeta,  lost the most weight during August and won well-earned bragging rights. Dr. Pooja, won the second round in September. “Any time you’re in a group dynamic, it’s more fun,” Dr. Geeta said. “Since it’s such a disliked subject for many people, I think the game encourages everyone as we’re all working towards the same goal.”

Since the first contests last semester, the game has stepped up a notch.Forty members of our faculty are participating, including eight male members. Any faculty member is welcome to take part, from teachers to administration. The general attitude among contestants seems to be one of teamwork and support as opposed to competition. The financial incentive is split between two winners: the person who loses the most weight and the person who loses the highest percentage of body weight over the period of the competition.

“We’re making a difference,” Dr. Geeta said. “Plus, it’s much easier to do with the encouragement of others all working for the same goal.”  Dr. Shanthi summed up the spirit of the competition. “I don’t care if I win, I just want to lose”.
