Kitchen gadgets are a strange one; there are some really pointless ones out there, taking up space, costing just way too much, and being little more than a less useful knife. Then there’s that suspicion that they’re little more than a status symbol. We thought we’d go over 3 of the types of available gadgets, which you may actually want, from cooking to getting rid of ants.
The Efficient: Food Mixers and Blenders
Example: the Magimix
Huge, weird looking, and potentially difficult to clean, yet good blenders can be incredible devices, quickly turning a half an hour job into a 2 minute one. If you want to reduce the amount of time you’re spending cooking, and max out on those dedicated study hours, consider buying a food processor. Also known as blenders and food mixers, a wide range of makes and models are available – look for one that’s suitable both for chopping down vegetables for cooking fine sauces, and making healthy, cooling vegetable and fruit juices. Even the most basic model will save heaps of time spent with a knife and chopping board.
As with all appliances used in food preparation, it’s important to keep all components clean and hygienic if you want to avoid a pest invasion. Ants in particular may find that food residue to be incredibly tempting. That raises the question: how do you get rid of ants?
The Practical: Ant and Pest Control
Example: the Spider
There was a lot of excitement in recent years for sonic repellent devices, as another device that proved we’re living in the future. Seen as an ideal solution, as they simply repel the pests, meaning no death or clean up. However there’s no consensus about their effectiveness, so while you may want to give them a go, we can’t promise them to be the solution to getting rid of ants.
The many species of ants that tend to invade homes across India have one thing in common – a desire for food. If you’ve wondered how to get rid of ants, the answer is simple: take away the food. Then there’s no reason for them to troop across your kitchen floor in an angry, biting line. Wipe down surfaces after preparing food, clean the floor regularly, and never leave food lying around – always package it securely and keep it in a cupboard or refrigerator. Check out this Cleanipedia article for more tips on ant-proofing your kitchen! Chemical aids are available for domestic use, but be warned – some can be dangerous for both you and your pets.
The Weird: Slushie Makers
Example: the Retro Slush Maker
Slushies and crushed-ice drinks started out making a big splash in America, and have become popular across the world. Water is frozen, then crushed or grated, before being mixed with a sweet, tasty syrup. The resulting mixture makes a delicious and cooling drink on a hot day, and the great news is that slushie-making appliances are now available for domestic use.
Perhaps not the best choice for a small kitchen, or a tight budget, but it’s hard to deny that there’s not something appealing about being the guys with the Slushie maker. A slushie maker might be the perfect addition to your student kitchen when the air-conditioning, fans, or coolers aren’t cutting it, and there are a variety of makes and models available. Some models are more complex and require more electricity. Others are hand operated. Whichever you choose, be sure to freeze clean, fresh water on each use. Impress your friends with brightly coloured and unusual refreshments, or just try something weird and new for yourself!
