First Day Of School

What can you do to best prepare your children for their first day of school experience? What techniques can you use?

It’s every parent’s dream to have a child grow up who is able to make the right decisions and can tell right from wrong. You want your child to understand that certain behavior is not appropriate and that other behavior is. This can be one of the most important lessons you ever will teach your child, and there’s no real correct way to do it. There are, however, some things you can do throughout your child’s toddler, child, preteen, and adolescent years that will help your child make the choices you think are best.

  • Treat your child how you want him to treat others. Your child learns from you and learns how to care for other people from you and others with whom he interacts. You need to treat your child in a moral way. Teach him that he should feel empathy for someone else. Show him you care. Some child psychiatrists claim that children can’t exude the feeling of caring for someone else unless he has experienced someone caring for him.
  • Tell your child how you expect him to behave. Talk with your children about your thoughts on different moral issues and different situations that may arise throughout his life that may require him to make a moral decision. Tell him what you would do. The more you explain how you would make decisions, the better the chance he’ll make the same decisions.
  • You need to walk the walk. Your children are learning from you every step of the way. If you’re telling your children to behave one way, but you behave another way, they are getting mixed messages and are more likely to behave in the way you behave. You need to live moral lives as you see it in order for your children to learn to be moral beings themselves.
  • Present your children with different situations. Throughout your child’s life, you need to show your child how to handle certain situations. Explain to your child how you would handle a particular situation and they will be more inclined to react the way you teach them to react.
