As most of you’ve probably come to know by now, Engineering is not without its fair share of diversity. What started out as 4 core concepts of Applied Science has bolstered a wide array of different fields of engineering for different applications that humans have come to use in the past few decades. MIT Manipal, not one to sit behind and let others take over, in its 61 years of existence, has made some pretty bold strides in the development of technology and the curriculum needed for said technology. Here is a short guide to all the different branches in MIT Manipal. For a more indepth look into each of the branches, we would recommend you look at our ‘Questionable Path’ series.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Let’s start with ‘royalty’ shall we? If the roaring engines of a supercar, the easy to the eye yet complicated arrangements of gear shafts or the various intricate yet beautiful 3D Models bring joy to your face and spark the inner curiosity inside you, then this is definitely the branch you need to pursue. It is one of the very first and the oldest branch of engineering offered at MIT Manipal, being first offered way back in 1960.

Apart from the traditional core subjects of the branch which include Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials, Material Science and others, subjects in recently emerging fields like Finite Element Theory, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Heat Treatment of Engineering Alloys, and Composite Materials are included as electives so that interested students have an opportunity to learn these subjects. The course curriculum is thoroughly and timely revised with modifications made to include advanced topics of technical relevance every four years. The faculty is highly specialized and consists mostly of PhDs and others which are currently pursuing their PhD. The placement scenario is also very good in this branch and the students make it to various diverse organizations and work places and in some cases also in fields different from the core working industry.

COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

The very source by which anyone who might be reading this, or the source through which this is written, the big vast network which everyone uses every day, the huge chunks of data floating through the very airwaves, the numerous problem solving which goes into running the modern world all of this is comprised within this branch of engineering. This course was first offered the very first time in MIT Manipal in 1985.

The course curriculum comprises of everything required to be a skilled worker in this domain which includes computer design and structure, data structures, networking, logic design etc. plus many specializations and electives to choose from. The revision of the curriculum here also follows the same four-year revision pattern to keep the course up to date with the needs of the industry. The faculty consists of a mixed variety of teachers specializing in the different aspects of the course study. Also they prove excellent mentors and guides for the various projects that the students may wish to take an everything which the students want to explore on their own. MIT Manipal boasts a very good and successful record in placements of the students in this branch. The students of this and some other related branches grab the highest packages offered by the companies coming on campus.

ELECTRONICS & COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

Everything and anything related to the design, analysis and applications of electronic and communication systems comes under this branch. The various systems that find application in almost every field of the industry are handled by the professionals of this particular field of engineering. This course was first offered in MIT in 1972.

Often being hailed one of the toughest branches of engineering, the regular four-year curriculum revision system at MIT makes sure the topics and skills taught to the students are all up to date with the requirements of the industry. Apart from VLSI Design, MicrocontrollersCommunications and Digital Systems Design, many  electives and minor specializations are offered by this branch for various other subjects. Some of this even include subjects such as Business Management and Telecommunication. The faculty is again a decent mix of professors with doctorate degrees and those that are pursuing one. The placement scenario is also very good in this branch. When a company such as Cisco is coming back every year to recruit students, you can very well guess the scope of placements.

CIVIL ENGINEERING

In the ever expanding India and the world, there is always more to build to keep up with the pace of progress which the society is making. In a very fast emerging and developing such as India, this is the branch which prepares individuals for these various construction projects. Civil engineering was one of the very first courses offered at MIT.

The students under this branch study everything from the basic surveying to the strength of materials used in building, to the geo-technical aspects of construction and also on how to keep the environment untouched and unharmed during all these processes. And as done in every other branch at MIT, the curriculum undergoes revision after every 4 years. The faculty consists of some of the oldest and some of the most experienced faculty at MIT. The students of this branch may not snatch the big bucks during the placements as much as some other branches, but the amount of core placements are decent and the basis for further education in both India and abroad is firmly set in.

BIOTECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING

The various aspects of the life sciences and the engineering approach that can be put in them is the main goal of this particular branch of engineering. Still a new and emerging field in our country, it is slowly and gradually finding its feat in the industry in its applications and research and development which are crucial to the companies which require its services. This relatively new field of engineering course was first offered in MIT in 2005.

The subjects include every aspect required to have all the necessary theoretical knowledge required and all its practical applications in the various biological subjects. Industrial microbiology, biochemistry, bio-reaction engineering and bioinformatics are some of the main subjects being taught in MIT. The faculty is very helpful and is mostly project and research oriented which are the most important aspects related to this branch. The placement doesn’t see the huge demands for graduates of Biotechnology as much as in some other branches but the majority of students find themselves going on to pursue higher education in this field, whether in India or abroad and see themselves moving towards the research fields.

MEDIA TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING

In the modern world which is run under this huge bracket of exchange of information, Media in all its various forms and types provides the very basic structure for the origination and the supply of these huge chunks of information all across the world. For those looking into going into the systems which keep information age going, this is a very unique branch to be a part of. MIT was one of the very first, and still one of the very handful of institutions around the country which offers this as a technical course. It was introduced way back in 1992 as the Department of Print & Media Technology since renamed to Media Technology.

The knowledge of the uses and working of every bit of instrument and tools used in the world of televised, print and computerized media is bestowed upon the individuals working under this branch. Subjects included are Imaging Techniques, Electronic Composition, Sound engineering. The faculty consists of the professionals who have worked in all of these fields or are alumni of this institution under the study of the same subject. This branch provides on of the best scopes in entrepreneurship as the students having this specialized degree can open businesses of their own or also work as freelancers. And the on campus placements always offer a wide number of industries to work in.

ELECTRONICS & INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING

This is a branch which was earlier seen as just a specialization that people used to do after completing their degree in electrical or electronic engineering. However, this is now offered also as a bachelor’s degree and started at MIT in 2001. It primarily deals with automation, field instruments and final control elements (valves) that measure and control various physical parameters (temperature, pressure, flow and so on). Its application is very vast including bio-med, chemical, oil & gas, power and many more.

This year, the branch changed its name from Instrumentation & Control Engineering, to Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering after many students suggested the change in the Curriculum Conclave that meets once every 4 years to discuss and deliberate on the curriculum. The subjects studied under this consist of a mix of those studied under electrical, electronics and communicational engineering and also a good amount of programming is involved. The regular 4-year curriculum revision keeps the course fresh and industry ready. One can always pivot to their particular interest even inside the branch which is something many people do inside this particular branch. The qualified students can also sit in the interviews of the various other related branch interviews during the placement season.

MECHATRONICS ENGINEERING

As the name suggests, this branch is a mix of the skills learnt in fields of mechanical, electrical, electronics, instrumentation and control systems and also computer programming. This mix bag consists of how all these branches overlap for certain operations to be carried out in a specialized way. This branch of engineering is relatively new in our country. It has major applications in robotics, manufacturing assembly line operations and a lot of other stuff. This branch was first offered at MIT in the year 2006 by the Mechanical Engineering Department later branching out to its own department.

As mentioned, the subjects taught in this particular discipline is a mix of the subjects taught in other branches. Some of them include strength of materials and thermodynamic and heat systems which are also a part of the mechanical stream, digital integrated circuits and linear control theory which are also a part of the electrical and electronics branch. Many minor specializations and electives help students choose a path in which they want to shape a career out of this branch. The faculty is a mix of those specialized in the branch of Mechatronics and also professors from other related branches.
