Madaari – Irrfan’s Best performance till date!

Film Review: Madaari
Date: July 22 2016
Director: Nishikant Kamath
Cast: Irrfan Khan, Vishesh Bansal, Jimmy Shergill
Rating: ****

Irrfan Khan in a lead role, in any movie, guarantees a good time at the movies. Coupled with some solid actors like Jimmy Shergill and a blockbuster director of Drishyam fame, Nishikant Kamath, you would be  a little on the slower side to miss such a movie. “Madaari” released on the same weekend as the much hyped “Kabali” and has left the latter far behind in terms of satisfaction for the audience. Word of mouth buzz is much better for Madaari, and this made me go watch it at the theaters last night.

An ordinary man/Irrfan Khan kidnaps the son of a powerful man, Home Minister/Tushar Dalvi and throws down the gauntlet to get him if possible!

This is not a regular cop and culprit chase. The issue is not ‘who’ but ‘why’. Shot on varied and fast changing locations within the interiors of India, the characters walk the sands, tan in the sun, sleep on chugging trains, ride in rickety buses and walk hungry for days. The pleasing cinematography and the well paced narrative certainly adds to the value of this anti-corruption movie!

What works for the film is message and the intent. Director Nishikant Kamath has always displaced radical choice subjects beginning with his award winning Dombivali Fast, later Mumbai Meri Jaan on bomblasts and recently debate on right and wrong in Drishyam. This time Kamath knocks on your concience and exposes those in power.

The climax is something unmissable and carries a lot of meaning. It was an absolute delight to watch the last 15 minutes of Madaari. At the beginning of the movie, Irrfan Khan’s voiceover announces that this movie does not have a normal ending – neither the powerful wins, nor does the timid. And true to its word, you will be amazed at how an alternate ending was even possible!

The film can be watched by the entire family and is quite emotional and moving! The dialogues are great. The song “Masoom Sa” is very powerful in the voice of Sukhwinder Singh.

All in all, this is a much better choice compared to the other movies on offer this weekend.
