Sportz Quake 2016: Closing Ceremony


Intercollegiate rivalry, Departmental face-offs and playful matches between friends,Sportz Quake 2016 saw it all. It was an action-packed, fun-filled and adrenaline fueled five days providing nail-biting entertainment to all present, which finally came to an end on 16th February.

Sportz Quake is an annual sports fundraiser held at Sharada Courts, organized by the Social Welfare Committee of Kasturba Medical College and is open to participants from all streams and walks of life. Proceeds collected are used for charitable purposes like providing scholarships to school-going children and covering the expenses of surgeries for girl children in the Pediatric department of Kasturba Hospital, to name a few.

Conceived initially in 2012 as a Cricket fundraiser, it has expanded to now include the sports: Throwball, Dodgeball, Football, and Table Tennis. The sport on spot for this year was Hopscotch, with the unbeaten contenders Anuj Parikh and Arrsh from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal holding a record of 1 minute 13 seconds.

The closing ceremony’s highlights included:

The highly anticipated cricket match between the Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal; Dr. Poornima Baliga and the Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University; Dr. HS Ballal,

The Football, Dodgeball and Throwball Finals and

The surprise holiday announced at the closing ceremony.

Dr. Lavanya Rai, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kasturba Medical College also graced the end ceremony with her presence, but to the crowds dismay did not partake in the games.

The Dean’s team boasted talents such as the Associate Deans: Dr. Pragna Rao, Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy and Dr. Sharath Kumar Rao, Medical Superintendent: Colonel Dayanand, and a Senior Resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Dr. Shubha Rao.

The Pro-Chancellors team was not far behind, with equally capable players such as The Registrar: Mr. Narayan Sabhahit, Director of Student Affairs: Dr. Suma Nair, Deputy Registrar Academics (Health Sciences): Dr. Shyamala Hande, Deputy Director General Services: Dr. Prakash Chandra and Deputy Director of Student Affairs: Dr. Sulatha Bhandary.

The match consisted of 6 overs of 4 balls each. Witty commentary was provided by Dr. Pavan Bhat, an Intern of Kasturba Hospital. The spectators were in high spirits and cheered both teams tirelessly. Hoots and cat calls were flung from time to time to ensure that there was not a single dull moment.

The Dean’s team chose to bat first and much to the their delight were bowled a large number of wides, helping them rack up the runs easily. However, they saw a few surprise losses with Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy being caught out and Dr. Shubha being clean bowled. On popular demand, the Dean chose to bat again and along with Dr. Pragna Rao manage to accomplish a decent score of 37 for the loss of four wickets. However, the Pro-chancellor’s team put up a good fight and won with a score of: 40 for the loss of two wickets.

The Pro-Chancellor, Dr. HS Ballal then delivered a rousing speech commending the Social Welfare Committee on their work and rewarded the enthusiasm of the crowd by ordering the Dean to declare a much deserved holiday. The Dean, Dr.Poornima Baliga obliged, expressing that this was the first time that a holiday had been awarded for losing a game and that she could not deny the Pro-chancellor, as he was her teacher.

Dr. HS Ballal also promised to contribute to the first and second prizes for the winners of the tournament and match the collection that the event had received, from the University fund.

The ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks given by Ms. Ujjwala Singh, Secretary of the Student Welfare Committee and then the prizes were distributed.
