Patient Care at Government Hospitals in Coimbatore

Coimbatore or Kovai, the Manchester of South India is situated in the western part of Tamil Nadu, bordering Kerala and Karnataka. The city is called ‘Manchester of South India’ as it is well known for its textile industries and due to the salubrious climate the city is also known as poor man’s Ooty.

The city is a hub for educational institutions. The district has an excellent academic infrastructure, which churns out over 20,000 engineering and 28,000 non-engineering graduates every year.

The city also has some world class hospitals which attracts people from other parts of the world for cheap and quality treatment. The govt medical facilities in Coimbatore are world class and this has made Coimbatore a destination across the world for medical tourism. The city is surrounded by several tourist spots – Ooty- the Queen of Hill stations is just 35 kilometres from Coimbatore. Mudhumala – a wildlife sancturary located near Ooty, Kodaikanal, Top Slip, Valparai, Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Black Thunder Water Them Park, Koval Kondatam (Them Park) and Munnar are other hill stations around Coimbatore.This prime location makes Coimbatore one of the preferred destinations for tourists, especially its proximity to neighbouring Kerala.

Under the World Bank-aided Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, all the major govt nursing homes in Coimbatore, received a major face-lift in the years 2008 -2010, to bring them at par with some of the best nursing homes across the country. Under the Project, Tirupur Government Hospital, which treats 2,500 outpatients a day, got a 50-bed maternity block at cost of Rs.1.66 crore besides Rs.55 lakh for renovation and repair of the existing buildings. While Udumalpet, Sulur, Avanashi and Periyanaickenpalayam Government hospitals in Coimbatore district received modern maternity blocks, Palladam government hospital received a generator room and cold storage facility for the mortuary and Karadivavi Government Hospital got an operation theatre.Coimbatore Government medical college hospital

At the government hospital in Coimbatore, a new wing is being constructed to provide patients with improved health care and open heart surgeries and angioplasties will be performed. The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on April 8th this year, began implementing a major information technology project that will allow a patient to access his/her case detail at any Government hospital across the State. All the patients coming to the CMCH are being given a Unique Identification Number under which their data would be stored. This will be accessible across the state and will help provide real time analysis of the data in the event of a major tragedy.

The Coimbatore Medical college hospital also provides radiotherapy treatment for cancer patients from the western districts of Tamil Nadu and even border districts of Kerala such as Palakkad. Apart from the Government hospital, several multi-facility hospitals function in the city. The district’s health department is amongst the best in terms of implementing government-initiated health schemes.
